Secretary welcomes the new Minister for Education

SECRETARY FOR EDUCATION WELCOMES NEW EDUCATION MINISTER, HON. LUCAS DAWA DEKENA, MP

On behalf of the Department of Education and all partners and stakeholders in the National Education System including, 2.3 million students and more than 63,000 teachers, I congratulate and welcome the Member for Gumine, Simbu Province and the newly appointed Minister for Education, Hon. Lucas Dawa Dekena, MP to the Department and Ministry of Education as a whole.

Mr. Dekena worked as a computer programmer and also a mathematics teacher in one of the national high schools prior to entering politics in 2007. He was elected for the National Alliance Party at the 2007 elections

I thank the Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape, MP for the appointment as Mr. Dekena brings with him years of experience in the ICT and teaching profession.

I also thank the Prime Minister for his support, respect and all the customary obligations paid to the late Minister for Education before making this appointment.

We have made a lot of improvements in many areas of education in the last two years under the leadership of late Mr. Uguro.

We look forward to working with Mr. Dekena and his staff in progressing education to ensure that every child is educated to Grade 12 – leaving no child behind in an education system that is comparable to regional and global standards in the next four years.

Despite the improvements in the system, we still have important challenges to do with financing core functions of education and access to sufficient and quality education facilities remain to be addressed.

However, I believe that with the knowledge and experience and the right type of leadership from the new Minister and his staff, we will progress education further.

Approved for Release

DR. UKE KOMBRA, PhD, OBE.
